Carl Verney, 90, of Warren died Thursday morning May 11, 2017 at Gillette nursing Home in Warren with family by his side.

 

Carl was born December 5, 1926 in Blainsburg, Pa. a son of Anton and Anna Kusnir Verney and came to the area over 75 years ago. He attended East Pike High School in California, Pa. and had worked for Copperweld Steel for thirty five years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Byzantine Church in Warren for many years.

 

Carl was known to be a tremendous conversationalist with a keen sense of humor. For several years he and his wife, Marialice served as stewards for the Slovak Club. He enjoyed tending his garden, working crossword puzzles from the Warren Tribune, which he read every day and listening to Polka music. He was an avid Cleveland Indian’s fan and he enjoyed eating his apple each day.

 

Besides his wife, the former Marialice Maddix, who was his “Boomer” whom he married April 30, 1960, he leaves two daughters, Carla (Robert) Cooper in Chicago, Illinois and Vanessa (Richard) Mussatto of Plainfield, Illinois. He also leaves two granddaughters, Marissa and Makayla Mussatto both of whom he was very proud and loved very much. Carl held a special place in his heart for his great-grandson, Sam Lipov, who is the son of Robin and Eugene Lipov.

He also leaves several nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Ludwick, Felix, Adolf, Victor, and Jordan, as well as his sister, Betty Sasala.

 

A funeral mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday May 13, 2017 at Saint Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Warren with Father Simeon Sibenik officiating. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Staton-Borowski Funeral Home in Warren and one hour prior to the services at the church.

 

The family requests material contributions take the form of donations to the church.
