William J. Thorne of Cortland Ohio entered into rest on Friday, February 3, 2017 at the Hilton Head Island Medical Center in Hilton Head, South Carolina while on vacation. He was 75. William was born the son of the late William and Evelyn (Jenkins) Thorne on December 18, 1941 in Youngstown, Ohio and had resided in Cortland, Ohio for over 30 years. He was a 1959 graduate of Poland High School and then earned a Bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University. Later, he received his Master’s Degree from Westminster College. He was a Social Studies teacher at Champion High School for 30 years retiring in 1995. In addition to teaching at Champion, William was the head varsity baseball coach for 25 years and also the head cross country coach. Later, he taught Career Based Intervention at Lakeview High School where he was also on the football coaching staff. Upon retirement, William volunteered his time at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital. On July 11, 1970, William was united into marriage with the former Kristine Tollefson and had shared 47 years together. His life will be remembered and celebrated by those he leaves behind, his loving wife, Kristine Thorne of Cortland, Ohio, son, Eric J. Thorne of Newburyport, Mass., and grandchildren, Addison and Tyler Thorne. William is preceded in death by his parents. Memorial Services will be 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at the Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, 962 North Road, NE, Warren, Ohio. Officiating will be Reverend Carl G. Kish. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home prior to the services.
