Della M. Sabo, 90, of Warren, entered peacefully into eternal life on Thursday, October 29, 2020 at 10:50 p.m. in Trumbull Regional Medical Center under the comforting care of hospice following a short courageous battle with lung cancer.
She was born Friday, February 28, 1930 in Prince Edward Island, Canada, the daughter of the late Phil and Regina Gaudet DesRoches and came to the United States in 1951.
Della was a graduate of Miscouche High School in Prince Edward Island, Canada and attended a three-year Nursing School in Hotel Dieu Moncton New Brunswick, Canada.
She was a registered nurse working first at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati from 1951 until 1954. In 1956 she began working at Trumbull Memorial Hospital and would work as a nurse there for 33 years; 20 years as head nurse, before retiring in 1989.
Della was highly active in her work life, social life, and church life. She was leader of Encore Breast Cancer Survivor Group and officer of the Trumbull Memorial Hospital retiree group. She was a longtime member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton-SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Warren where she was a member of the 50 Plus Club, Worship & Environment Committee; Pirohy and Bake Sale worker, member of the church’s 300 Club and was longtime ticker seller; church usher and greeter.
After retiring, Della enjoyed traveling and volunteer work. She especially enjoyed her many “Island visits”. Della enjoyed many happy years living “Just for Today” and “One Day at a Time”. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Della was married to the love of her life, Elmer T. Sabo on April 23, 1955 and they were happily married for 59 years until his passing on November 19, 2014.
She is survived by three brothers Victor (Evelyn) DesRoches of Newfoundland, Canada, Joe DesRoches of Calgary Alberta, Canada and Paul (Loraine) DesRoches of British Columbia Canada; by a sister Anne Gallant (Doug) Moncton of New Brunswick, Canada; by numerous nieces and nephews, dear friends and by her church family.
Besides her parents and husband, Elmer, Della was preceded in death by her brother Louis DesRoches and sister Rose Migahara.
Calling hours will take place on Thursday, November 5, 2020 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in the Staton-Borowski Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial, with Fr. Christopher Cicero officiating, will be offered Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish-SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, preceded by closing prayers to be recited at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home prior in leaving for the church.
Entombment will take place in All Souls Cemetery in Cortland.
The family, funeral home and church will be practicing social distancing and proper health protocols. Due to the continued and increasing spread of Covid-19, the 6-foot social distancing rule will be honored, and all guests, must wear a mask. For the safety of everyone, we politely ask that all visitors exit the funeral home after paying their respects to the family. Please do not linger.
The Sabo family understands if you feel uncomfortable or if you are unable to attend, please keep them and Della in your thoughts and prayers.
